The Top 5 Thing We Love on MDI
Okay, we lied, there are so many things to love about Mount Desert Island that we couldn’t really narrow it down to just five – so we choose to expand on our top hikes, eats & drinks, and places to see.
As residents to one of America’s most beautiful places, we have had the opportunity to explore our little island and have put together some must-do activities when visiting Terramor Outdoor Resort. While this list is not comprehensive, it gives you a good starting ground to begin planning your stay. Enjoy!
5 Top Eats & Drinks
- Geddy’s: One of our favorite places to get fresh seafood, Geddy’s has been in Bar Harbor for over 50 years. While you can’t go wrong with the lobster, we always recommend the Fish and Chips as another, mouthwatering option.
- Udder Heaven Ice Cream: With a slogan of “Milk from Maine, Ice Cream from Heaven,” you just know the sweet treats you will experience here will be delicious! Not in the mood for ice cream? Try their famous whoopie pies.
- Provender Kitchen + Bar: While a bit off the island, located in Ellsworth, this has quickly become one of our staff’s favorite restaurants. Located in a cute, restored downtown building, Provender offers up an exquisite seasonal menu inspired by Maine.
- Thrive Juice Bar & Kitchen: Looking for something quick and healthy? Look no further than Thrive. With a selection of minimally processed food and nourishing drinks, this is a can’t miss stop in Bar Harbor.
- The Travelin’ Lobster: No MDI restaurant list would be complete without the Travelin’ Lobster, one of our all-time favorite lobster spots. And, lucky for you (and us!), it’s located just up the road from Terramor. Everything on the menu is scrumptious, but get there early, because it gets busy!
5 Must Do Hikes
- Beehive Loop Trail: This one is for the more adventurous and seasoned hikers. While only 1.4 miles, Beehive is one of Acadia’s rung and ladder trails taking you up steep granite staircases, iron rungs, and exposed cliff faces. The end result; beautiful scenic views of the park overlooking Sand Beach
- Jordan Pond Trail: This trail can be done in a full loop, or divided into two out and back trails. For families with young children or those looking for a more leisurely hike we recommend the eastern half of the trail – starting at the boat launch for Jordan Pond. For those looking for work out, either do the full loop or start on the western half at the wooden bridges. Jordan Pond Loop is one of Acadia’s favorite and most sought-after hikes.
- Hadlock Loop Trail: This 4.2 mile loop is a moderate trail intersecting with several Carriage Roads. The trail has significant incline and declines, but is a wide and well surfaced trail. Following brooks and hiking near lakes is one perk while crossing Carriage Bridges and being amongst the trees creates a stunning and memorable hike.
- Compass Harbor Trail: A quiet, short hike leads you to a rocky stretch of coast with astounding views while showcasing the history of the park. This 0.8 mile down and back trail goes past George B. Door’s former estate – known as the “Father or Acadia National Park.” It’s an easy day hike that leaves you feeling inspired.
- David & Neva Trail: A beautiful, scenic 2.5 mile point-to-point trail takes you through wooded paths and tree lined trails. This moderate hike uses a mix of traditional single trail with wooden walkways to create a magical hiking experience.
5 Things to See & Do
- Sherman’s Bookstore: Maine’s oldest bookstore, Sherman’s is a can’t miss stop located in downtown Bar Harbor. A selection of local authors paired with historical collections of Acadia National Park are on full display alongside bestseller’s and classics.
- Wild Garden’s of Acadia: Experience a stunning selection of color as you view over 400 native plant species within the Wild Gardens of Acadia.
- Criterion Theater
- Rockefeller Bridges: John D. Rockefeller funded 16 stone-faced bridges in Acadia National Park along the famous Carriage Roads. These bridges, originally constructed between 1913 and 1940 still stand today and are a testament to the admiration Acadia’s founders had for the area.
- Bar Harbor Farmer’s Market: Visit with and support local farmers and produces at Bar Harbor’s Farmer’s Market. Every Sunday at 9am at the YMCA in Bar Harbor or Thursday at 9am at the Northeast Harbor marina. It’s a great way to feel the energy and excitement of the community.
