At Terramor, our mission is to create authentic, immersive experiences in nature for our guests. As facilitators of outdoor ventures, we strive to share the endless opportunities that the Maine outdoors has to offer, and that includes the local wildlife! We are now offering ‘Beekeeping with Omar’ where our guests can learn all about bees, the process of beekeeping and why they are important for our environment. You might even get a taste of sweet honey!
We asked our head Beekeeper, Omar, a few fun questions about our beloved bees on-site.
What is the most interesting learning aspect about the bees so far?
Beekeeper: The most interesting learning aspect about bees is their ability to sense a person’s temperament. If a beekeeper is exuberating the sense of fear or anxiousness, the bees, in return, will react to those senses in a similar manner. Having a serene and peaceful demeaner while handling a beehive, the colony translates a beekeeper’s calm vibe as a sign of safety and protection.
What is the harvesting process timeline for the bees?
Beekeeper: Many beekeepers find it best to harvest honey between July and September. The colder it gets the harder it becomes to extract the honey from the wax frames.
How many times a day do you check on the bees?
Beekeeper: It is recommended to check on bees no more than once a week. Opening a beehive often could cause stress to the colony that could result in a slower production of honey and wax.
What kind of bees do you work with here at Terramor?
Beekeeper: Russian honeybees.
